Facts about magnets

Magnets form part of things we come across everyday- ATM Machines, mobile phones, Freezers, name them. Here are a few quick facts about them:

  • Magnets were first discovered in a town named 'Magnesia', hence the name Magnet.
  • If you cut a magnet in half, you get two smaller magnets as a result, each with their own north and south pole

  • The north pole on a magnet points towards the south pole of the earth. This is because they are both giant magnets and are aligning themselves together. This is how a compass works.

  • Rubbing a magnet and a metal together will make the metal a magnet. This process is called magnetisation.

  • Electromagnets are only magnetic while current passes through them. If you pass electricity through a nail wrapped in a copper wire, it turns into a magnet. Cut the flow of electricity and it is becomes a nail and wire again.

  • There exists a magnetic field around all magnets. A magnetic field is the region of space, around the magnet, where it's magnetizing ability can be felt

  • An electricity generator consists mainly of a magnet moving in and out of a coil of wire. The fuel in the generator is just to provide the energy needed to push the magnet
